Handbook Traveling - part 3 - Lost in a Jungle 2

In the first part of the article series "Handbook Traveling", I have already mentioned about how to deal with the problem of being lost in the jungle but nobody know to find you. I have suggested some ways that you can apply in order to find the best way to get out of the jungle maze. In this part, the situation is that you are lost and somebody figure it out and organize a search to find you; but it does not mean that you stay still and just wait for those people. Hence, what should you do??

LOST BUT PEOPLE FIGURE IT OUT AND ORGANIZE A SEARCH TO FIND YOU

Before going into a wild area, you have told it to somebody, but you haven't return back on the day you said to them. There are some reasons: you go somewhere without your group member and then get lost; you are given a mission at a strange place and then you get lost. Hence, when your friends figure it out, they will organize a search to find you. But what should you do in this situation???

Of course, you will have a shock when knowing that you are lost, but you should calm down and stay relaxing, because things are not bad as you may think. Try to remember all the skills and competencies about survival and getting out of danger that you have learnt or heard and apply them; it will help you to develop and get over the barriers to survive.

While waiting for somebody to find you, you should take these advices as reference:

- STAY STILL if you cannot find the way to get out and you are sure that somebody will find that you are lost and organize a search. It is very necessary for you because it will reduce strength and energy consuming. Moreover, you have lack of food and easy to get hurt in the wilderness, so it is better to stay still.

- EXPLORING THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND in order to find out any streams, foods, sheltering places, or even the firewood.

- MAKE A PLACE FOR SHELTERING which is comfortable; it will help you to feel safe, relaxing, and reduce worries and stress.

- CREATE SOMETHING EASY TO FIGURE in order to let people who are finding you (or the helicopters) easier to figure out your place. Try to make fire (at a spacious place), stretch a wide colorful fabric (clothes, hats) at some high places.

- MAKE BIG NOISES/ SOUND like: whistling, knocking on an empty tree-trunk, or shoot the gun (if you have)

- KEEP THE FIRE BURNING ALL THE TIME if you have enough firewood - in order to make a sign as well as keep away of the wild dangerous animals. But you have to be careful of forest fire.

- BE PATIENT AND CAREFUL. Do not be nervous and hurried to find a way to get out, because you will get into a more lost, which will be difficult for people to find you.

- BE FEELING SECURE because you body can stand for the lack of water in 3 days, and for lacking food for 3 weeks. What you need to do is to stay still, people will soon find you.

LOST A GROUP

We do not mention about a well-organize group, but if your group is not in this type, what you have to do is choosing a LEADER who is vivacious and responsible, and every member in you group have to follow strictly the leader. The missions of a leader are:

- Assign tasks for each member in a group; take full advantage of any skills, and competencies of those members.

- Do not let your member be disappointed, which will gain the puzzled for the other members (even the leader may be puzzled, but do not show it out to the member).

- A leader can refer to any ideas of the member, but leader should make the final decision himself/herself.
- Solving reasonably some problems which often appear in a group such as: tiredness, thirsty, illness, or even the argument within a group.

- Create an optimistic environment for members, create solidarity within a group; consoling the member who is lowering their morale. Those actions will gain the strength and spirit to the group to survive and get out of the dangers.

BE AWARE OF LOST

In order to beware of lost in the jungle, or wilderness, you should follow these advices below

1. Before going into a jungle or wilderness

- Announce your friends or relatives (or the responsible authorities) to know where you will go, what will you do or plan for the journey, and when you will come back.

- Practice physical strength, especially for your legs in order to overcome a long journey of 20 - 30 km per day.

- Make a habit of bringing some necessary things along with you such as: all-round knife, lighter, compass, map

- Do remember to bring "Survival Bag" for a journey in the jungle.

- Learn and practice skills of using all the equipments as well as survival competencies. Know how to use the map and compass. Have a sufficient knowledge about the nature in order to easily distinguish the trace, sound, taste, smell, or property of things around/

- Know how to deal with the illness - have knowledge at first aid.

2. Getting into the forest

If you have a map:

- Each 20-30 minutes, check your place you are standing on the map, compare if it suit the real or not.

- Observe and compare the direction of the wind and your way, if you find that the wind direction is different from the first time, check your direction again.

- Choose a standard place to go, thus, even you are going around, you are still in the direction

- Remember the time and the moving speed in order to calculate the stretch of road you have gone.

- Mark on the map some detail which let you easily figure out (which are not mention in the map) such as: old-age tree, big rock, cave, tent, stream, etc.

If you do not have a map:

- Leave some sign which is easier for you to figure such as: carving on the tree-trunk, tie up brushwood, tie a small fabric on the tree branches, etc. These signs have to be easy to distinguish, and have to be different from the signs left by the animal or the creature of nature.

- Sketch out a map, take note of some special detail of the terrain, or special view; mark on the map each time you change the direction.

- Monitor and remember the wind, sun, and moon direction, observe the constellation.

Imagination - Improvisation

Imagination and Improvisation can help you to improve the situation. They will help you to increase the enthusiasm and your spirit.

Always remember that your purpose is to survive, so that you should help yourself by "beautiful dreams", or "big projects" in the future. Therefore, imagination and improvisation can help you to overcome the current situation.

Keep your health, because if you are ill or have any hurt, your fortune of survival will be reduced very much.

Miserable, cold, and stress will decrease your effort. They are also the reasons for your tiredness and boredom; sometimes you can see some illusion and go mad. However, when realizing those symptoms, you do not have to worry, it is only the consequence of being so tired. What you should do is taking a rest.

The improvisation also includes the action of eating insects or strange food that you can find in the forest. When being alone in the jungle, if you do not let your brain to be imaginative, or you don't know how to improvise, then the jungle will plunge you.
