Sharing: Amazed by Vietnamese cuisine

"Recently, I have had an incredibly interesting trip in Asia in some countries like Hongkong, Vietnam, Cambodia. However, it can be said that the place which I've fallen in love with is Vietnam, especially Vietnamese foods are really wonderful" - said Mrs. Mia Stainby - a Canadian tourist from Vancouver - after tasting foods from 3 areas North - Middle - South in Vietnam - a country shaped like a letter S - according to papers Vancouver Sun.

In Hanoi, we did not miss the opportunity to taste the La Vong fried fish. They - the waiters - brought to our table a small brazier in order to let us ourselves fry the fried fish and taste it right at the table. The fried fish was processed with fennel and turmeric; it was eaten with rice noodles and peanuts. One evening, we went to a store selling spring rolls - the dishes made from pork, shrimp rolled by rice paper rolls - and I could ate freely those wonderful spring rolls.

It would also an unforgettable feeling if you tasted the food on the streets. My husband didn't want to miss any chances which my neighbor - Karen who had already been to Vietnam since last year - introduced. It was PHO. We wandered along the street and found out a small Pho restaurant. A woman and her son who sold Pho sliced beef thinly and arranged them into the bowl. The local people who were enjoying their pho bowls were surprised to see the two foreigners sitting down beside them were also excited eating delicious Pho.

However, you should use a book guide in order to find a good restaurant easily. Hoa Sen Dai (Wild Lotus) is one of the restaurant which is located inside a building built in French domination times in Hanoi. A waitress with a slender appearance (like every other beautiful Vietnamese girl) in a long dress made from silk set the table with many charming and precise Vietnamese dishes such as: shrimp surrounded by vermicelli - eat with chutneys (or chili sauce), grilled sea fish, water morning glory fried with garlic, griskin cooked with cashew nuts and mushroom, spring rolls with rice noodles.

In Hoi An - in the Middle of Vietnam, we enjoyed the shrimp rice cakes at Ong Dong restaurant next to the Thu Bon river bank. Baked banana cake and bread / noodles here were also great. The hotel we lived always had buffet with a lot of light delicious and tasty Vietnamese dishes in the morning.

A young couple from London showed us walking through a small shady lane to go to the place they had discovered - a restaurant name "Vuon Bi Mat" (Secret Garden) which had not mentioned in any book guide for tourist. We finished our delicious meal (with sweet fennel soup, tamarind and pork and fish hot pot, fried meat) by taking some photos with waiter groups in this tender restaurant.

Fried steamed glutinous rice - an impressive dishes for foreigners
In Ho Chi Minh city, every morning, from our window at the forth floor of the hotel we lived, I looked down to the road and saw a women riding bicycle and selling some food. On her bicycle, it was hanging with eggs, fishes, and met. Women in some stores around would come to that women on the bicycle to choose and buy some food right on the pavement.

I spent most of my spare time to discover all the dishes at Ngon restaurant (Delicious restaurant) - a very smart business idea. The cooking and selling areas were displayed in a circle inside an elegant French-style building. Each dish was severed on tables which were selling and cooking separately with all kinds of Vietnamese food from all areas in Vietnam. You can take a walk around the restaurant to try all the special food of every areas at the cooking places. I wish there was a Vietnamese restaurant like this in Vancouver! Note that there are also Ngon restaurants in Hanoi.

Ngon Restaurant

There are many Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver, but they just show the upside of the variety of special Vietnamese foods. We have never been introduced about the plenty of the fennel or the diversification of the sauces- tastes which are considered a distinctive cuisine of Vietnam.

I have an unforgettable impression of the special foods in Cuu Long River Delta. After a tour by bike, we had lunch with fried fish standing in a woody prop with a very impressive face. We also stopped by a coconut candy factory to buy some sweets made from a special fruit in this tropical areas.

Floating market in Can Tho

Floating market at Cuu Long River Delta is full of fresh fruit. The supermarkets can hardly compete with this local market full of fresh food, or the vendors on the streets.

One of the unforgettable attraction about traditional Vietnamese cuisine is the wonderful coffee taste. It can be considered as a vehement intense with the indescribable fragrance. Tasting slowly each drop of coffee with condensed milk at the bottom of the glass is also one pleasure worth appreciating.

We bought some packs of coffee as presents after a trip to Vietnam, but I think you should go to Vietnam to taste the traditional cuisine here to feel the soul of it. And I dare say that Vietnamese cuisine - that the REAL cuisine!
