The capital of Sarawak state is Kuching city which is gently located by the Sarawak. "Kuching" in Malay means cat, so that cat become a symbol of the city. The people here gather and store everything related to cats from ancient times to present such as: paintings, statues, movies about cat in the cat museum. Kuching is divided into two parts: North and South. These two sections are connected by two bridges across the Sarawak river. Green is the color symbolizing for North Kuching, where there is a majority of the Malay and Bumi Aborigines live. North Kuching, where most of the Chinese live, is symbolized as blue color (from the outlines of the roads to some important buildings are painted in blue). To view the whole city, tourists can rent a boat along the river and watch the beautiful sunset scene here.
Kuching has at least 9 museums and they are not far from each other. If you do not have much time, you should choose to visit Sarawak Museum, which is one of the best museums in Asia. Here, visitors must spend at least half of the day to see all the exhibitive items about the people, natural history, the artifacts of Malaysian and other Chinese porcelain. The museums is opened everyday in a week from 9 AM to 4.30 PM, and does not charge anything for entrance.
There are many national parks scattered throughout Sarawak. Bako is the oldest National Park in Sarawak and it is also near Kuching. Inside the park, there are many monkeys with trunk, bearded pigs, sliver-leaf monkey, and various plants of Borneo Peninsula including lots of wild orchids. If tourists want to see the biggest flower in the world - Rafflesia flower with the diameter up to 1 metre, please contact with the manager of Gunung Gading Park if there is any blooming flower. 2 hours going by motorcycle far from Kuching, you can live in some hostels inside the park or some hotel nearby.
The next journey is to Kubah National Park in 2000 ha space. The park has many sandstone hills rolling with the fresh stream and spectacular waterfalls. In the jungle, there are deers, squirrels, Hornbill birds, and any reptiles and amphibians. Nearby is the Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation Semenggoh, there are many species which are in the danger of extinct, including the orangutans which were rescued from the traffickers.
40-minute by car far from Kuchin, Damai - a best beach resort of Sarawak with the white-sand beaches, pristine forests, and many entertaining activities. There are also long houses of the local people, a luxurious golf center, and many marvelous seafood restaurants. There are many tours from Damai to the attractive fishing villages and some nearby islands of Malaysia; you can also take a trip around Santubong peninsula.
Miri - located near the border with Brunei - also a gateway of Northern Sarawak - has many national parks, rivers, and plateaus. Gunung Mulu National Park, about 45 minute flight from Miri, is famous for limestone caves, the biggest and longest caves in South East Asia. Niah Great Cave in Niah National Park, 2 hours by motorbike far from Miri, is a place which includes the oldest relics of mankind in SE Asia. Tourists come to his cave by the winding way through the forests full of birds and butterflies.
Tourists will be interested in the rich river system in Sarawak. Sibu is the major entrance to the center of Sarawak, and is also a starting point for the trips on the river to the towns in the region. The North of Sibu, 30 minute by motorbike far from Bintulu town, has Similajau National Park. Here, there are some stream with the wonderful jade color, wild tropical raining forest, and the yellow-sand beaches. Tourists can join in some activities like go sightseeing, or take a trip on boats, etc. In the South of Sibu and the East of Kuching is Batang Ai National Park, where almost all of the people still keep the old tradition beside the luxurious resort Batang Ai.
